Mexico Vacation Reservations & Travel Information For Loreto |
|
|
|
|
Overview |
| Loreto is a small,
charming town located midway
on the Baja Peninsula
bordering the Sea of Cortez.
It is famous for being the
first capital of the
Californias, its Jesuit
missions built in the 1600s
and for its excellent
fishing and whale watching.
The towns official slogan is
300 Years Old and Still
Undiscovered, and while
there is plenty to do here,
its not for those looking
for the glitz and glamour of
the larger Mexican resort
areas. Loreto has a quaint
downtown area with shaded
plazas and an attractive
boardwalk where locals and
tourists enjoy strolling
along the waterfront. You
can sail to the nearby
pristine islands of Isla
Coronado or Isla del Carmen
where you can snorkel in the
crystalline waters or sun
bathe on soft white sand
beaches. Whale watching is
very popular in Loreto from
the end of January to the
middle of April, and Loreto
has long been regarded as
one of the best places for
fishing for marlin, dorado,
sailfish and the highly
prized rooster fish. Other
activities nearby include
kayaking, scuba diving,
golf, beachcombing or just
relaxing and enjoying the
spectacular scenery. |

General Facts & Information |
| The weather in Baja
California is divided into
two distinct categories: hot
deserts and the cooler
regions near the oceans.
Baja is one of the hottest
and driest regions on the
North American continent.
Between the cities of El
Rosario and La Paz, rainfall
is extremely low, averaging
only two to four inches per
year. It has been known to
go for years at a time with
no rain at all in the desert
regions. However, the
northern and southern ends
of the Baja Peninsula get
significantly more rain in
wintertime. In the coastal
areas near La Paz and Bahia
de los Angeles, the cooling
ocean breezes helps moderate
temperatures somewhat, and
rainy days are rare outside
of the rainy season which is
generally the month of
September. When traveling
by air:
The closest airports in the
area are the Loreto airport
(LTO) located about 2 miles
(3 km) south of Loreto, the
Villa Constitucion airport (VIB)
located approximately 72
miles (116 km) southwest of
Loreto in Villa Constitucion,
Mexico, and finally the
Mulege airport (MUG) located
roughly 73 miles (118 km)
northwest of Loreto in
Mulege, Mexico. |
